EMY HOLDEN
ACTOR SINGER DANCER DIRECTOR CHOREOGRAPHER
About
My first role was in a summer stock production as a munchkin in the Wizard of Oz. I was nine. I hadn't even auditioned for the show. In fact, I had never been in a musical before. I was sitting in the back of the theatre while my friend rehearsed because my mother was watching her for the day. My mom stepped out to take my brother for an ice cream, and I remained in the back of the house completely transfixed by the rehearsal. As I sat in that playhouse, something came over me. The songs enveloped me– it was like “Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead” was giving me the biggest, most loving hug I had ever felt. I remember belting the lyrics out at the top of my lungs as the choreographer rehearsed the children on stage. Suddenly, he yelled, “quiet!” The theatre became so quiet that I could hear my heart beating. “Who is singing?!” He bellowed. He then proceeded to walk into the house and stand directly above my seat. “Were you singing?” I gave a hesitant nod. “Can you dance?” I shrugged my shoulders. “Get up on the stage. Let's see if you can.” And that was that. My mom came back to the theatre with my brother, and to her surprise I was on stage. From that moment on, I was hooked.
Theatre became my everything. I loved that I could just be me. I loved all of the people I got to meet– I loved hearing the audience laugh, and gasp and cheer. I loved being a part of something bigger than myself. I loved the collaboration. I felt fully alive. It was working in summer stock that ultimately inspired me to go to college for musical theatre, and to make the arts my life.

I'm currently based out of Fryeburg, Maine, and spend most of my time directing and choreographing at this point in my career-- though I do still love to perform. I received my BFA from Montclair State University where I studied musical theatre. I have a background in ballet (classical, neoclassical, and the Cecchetti method), as well as years of training in tap, jazz, musical theatre dance, and modern dance (Limón, Graham, and Cunningham technique). Upon graduating from MSU, I continued my training at the Broadway Dance Center and have had the honor and privilege of being able to perform, direct, choreograph and teach from Maine to Colorado. I currently work as a teaching artist, director and choreographer at Fryeburg Academy, Lake Region High School and the Jeanne Limmer Dance Center.
